Fireworks Safety (for Kitties)

Did you know the 4th of July and New Year's are the two days a year when most pets go missing? What do those two days have in common? FIREWORKS. While we may not be experts on fireworks safety for humans, we are happy to provide some tips and tricks to help keep kitty calm during fireworks when the sky goes boom:

  • Take a photo of your cat to share in case they get out. We know your phone is probably filled with plenty already, but having a recent photo is always more helpful!

  • Make sure your cat's microchip is up-to-date with your current contact information (your name, phone number and/or email, and current address). It’s recommended to check this at least twice a year, so 4th of July and New Year’s are the perfect time to do so

  • If possible, make sure your cat has a collar with ID tag with up-to-date contact information. One with GPS tracking is great too!

  • Keep your cats inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks. If you have outdoor kitties, try to find them a safe space away from any firework activities (an indoor or contained space like a barn is best)

  • Provide a safe space for your cat during celebrations with toys and treats. Turn on relaxing music or the TV, cover the windows, and leave on the lights. Maybe a little catnip to take the edge off :)

  • If you're hosting guests, place notes on exit doors to remind guests to keep an eye out for your cats in case they try to escape. Even indoor-only kitties can become flight risks if they’re scared

If you have neighbors who celebrate with fireworks for more than one day a year or you notice your kitty is struggling to cope, talk to your veterinarian about other solutions (calming pheromones, anxiety medication, etc). For other ideas, check out the resources below
